This letter was sent civic organizations in Rappahannock County by Resident Engineer, James K. Skeens.
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the week of September 20-26, 1970, is National Highway Week. I feel it is my responsibility to keep the citizens of Rappahannock County informed regarding all facets of our Highway program. Accordingly, I would welcome an opportunity to speak to your club at some date in the future.
In the past, considerable progress has been made toward the improvement of the roads in Rappahannock County; however, much is left to be done before we have an adequate Highway System.
We are in the process of completing approximately one-half of the primary dual laning on Route 211. Only about one-third of the 220 miles of secondary system have been improved since the Virginia Department of Highways took over the secondary roads in 1932.
Notwithstanding the above, I am pleased with the work we have accomplished during the last four years, particularly on our Secondary System. We have been able to maintain our secondary system State. This has permitted a greater emphasis on improvements. During this period, we have improved approximately 20 miles of roads and replaced or rebuilt nine bridges.
