How often do you check the cash register tapes after you buy some groceries?
It appears that few of us do so. Yet it might be a good idea. One survey, run in grocery stores, showed that checker errors averaged about l'A per cent of total sales.
Almost every checker makes errors in ringing up sales. To err is human and after all, checkers are human.
Perhaps a good illustration of how easy it is to make mistakes is to compare checking with typing. If you’ve every typed, you know how difficult it is to do even one full page without at least one mistake. Practice and lots of it, cuts down on the number of mistakes, but it never completely eliminates them.
Running a cash register is similar to typing. You look at one thing and ring this up on a machine, at which you do not look. Somehuman errors are Inevitable.
