It s interesting to note when the largest number of errors were made in the study mentioned. One area was ringing up produce sales, where checkers also weighed and priced it. Checkers often misread the produce scales. Actually, here was a double chance for error, one reading the produce scale and another in ringing up the sales.

Another area of errors was in split purchases. Apparently, where items were priced as multiple units, 2/39 cents, 3/53 cents, 6/87 cents, checkers found it hard to come up with the right price if you bought just one can, bottle, or unit. Again, there was a double chance for error - one in mental arithmatic and one in ringing up the amount.

There’s another interesting aspect of these checker errors. Apparently, more errors are in the favor of customers than of the store.

Wjiy? Two possible answers come' to mind. One is that the checker is interested in public relations and gives the customer the benefit of the doubt in cases

[ to read. Another is that checkers often lack strong loyalty to their employees so again give customers the benefit of any doubtful figures.
