Car owners in Rappahannock County have a long way to go before they finish paying their share of the 42,500-mile Interstate Highway System. They have been contributing to t the cost of construction, via taxes on gas, oil and tires, since 1956, when the project began. Currently, their annual payments amount to approximately $68,000. The matter comes to the fore at this time because Congress is debating a new extension of time for completing the system, which has nearly 14,000 miles to go. The proposal would establish a new deadline--1978 instead of r1972. During that added period, the average Rappahannock County car owner would be contributing close to $180 in highway user taxes.
Some Congressmen, however, are strongly opposed to the whole principle of using these taxes, which run well over $5 billion a year, solely for road building. They contend that there are more important priorities.
They would use some of the money for refurbishing our railroad lines, especially with regard to commuter service, for providing aid to bus lines and for other forms of urban mass transit.
Meanwhile, the highway system, which was to have been completed by the end ofnext year at a cost of $41 billion, will need upwards of $75 billion before it is finished.
