“The father of the bride and social security have something in common. Both share in the wedding expense, even though social security’s share is small change- only 44 cents in 1969, said Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, district manager in Winchester. This is what it costs the Social » Security Administration to change a bride’s name on the computerized records at the headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. “And, since September is just as popular a month as June for weddings, this seems an appropriate time to remind all new brides of this important step,” adds the district manager.
Last year, over 3,000,000 brides changed their names on social security records. A simple form called a “Request for Change in Social Security Records” is all the newlywed needs to change her name. The forms are available at social security offices, post offices, and sometimes at employer personnel offices. After the social security office receives the form, the people there will send the bride a replacement social security card showing her new name, but the same social security number.
The new bride should also notify the payroll department where she works of her change in name, Mrs. Crumpton points out. This is important so her earnings under social security will be correctly reported by her employer. The social security computers will not credit earnings unless the name and the number agree with those in the master records.
The contributions made under social security by the new wife provide protection for her as well as the family she’ll probably be starting, adds Mrs. Crumpton.
“This could mean not only benefits for her retirement years but disability benefits or survivor benefits if accident or illness should strike,” the district manager said.
