Mailing Packages Overseas Many of you will be mailing packages overseas for Christinas to your sons, relatives, and Mends. It Is most important that the items to be sent be placed in a good sturdy container. These containers should be strong enough to retain and protect their contents during the course of normal mail handling. Boxes or cartons commonly used are corrugated or solid fiber board, Kraft board and chip board for ■mailer items. The strength of the cartons required will depend on the weight, size and nature of the article shipped. The outer containers should be the proper size to hold the items shipped plus enough space for cushioning material inside. Too large containers; the contents will shift. Too small, containers will buldge and possibly burst. Anytime you have more than one item in the container, cushion them so they will not damage one another.
Excelsior, flexible corrugated fiber board, or felt are commonly used for heavy items. For lighter items, shredded paper, tissue paper, cotton, and clothing are used. Your type of cushioning material will depend on the size and nature of items mailed.
Your outside wrapping should be at least equal in quality and strength to heavy grocery bags. Strong fiber board cartons may be wrapped and tied with twine or rope. Wrapping paper of good quality may be used; but if there is destruction of the paper, the name and address may be lost. Use your box itself, if it is a good; shipping retainer. Use reinforced tape even though the cost is greater and the package will be less vulnerable to failure. Strong twine may also be used for a closure. Be certain you have the correct address, APO number and zip code.
Now for some suggestions for the type of container to be used inside the package. Coffee cans, shortening cans with reuseable plastic lids, air tight plastic bags and items wrapped in alumium foil are good travelers.
