The other day I read this quote: “The true opposite of love is not hate but indifference. Hate, bad as it is, at least treats the neighbor as a THOU, whereas indifference turns the neighbor into an IT, a THING.” We say we love our neighbors, do we actually. I am sure that few of us hate our neighbors, but do we really love them? Aw, come now, cross your heart, do you?
A writer has said: “We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Perhaps the greatest sin of my life is the sin of omission or indifference. If a circumstance is thrown across my path that I have to deal with personally, I dispose of it to the best of my limited ability. I’m afraid I am like the soldier who expressed himself thusly: “I never volunteer ter nuthin, an’ I obey orders under protest.” Well, almost. Perhaps that is what the poet had in mind when he penned these lines:
It is not the things you do, -dear,
It’s the things you leave undone
That bring so many heartaches
At the setting of the sun.
