The youngest celebrity of the hour in Virginia is Stephen Wayne Hale, 7, of Lynchburg, who has been named March of Dime: State Poster Child for the annual campaign to prevent birth defects. The announcement came today from Mr. Richard D Obenshain, Virginia State Chairman of the 1971 March ol Dimes.
“Birth defects can strike any family, anytime and anywhere,’ said Mr. Obenshain. “Stephen will represent some 5,500 babies borr every year in Virginia who have been denied a healthy birthright Throughout the country, the figure climbs to about a quartet of a million.” Children afflicted with birth defects can receive medical services at the March ol Dimes Birth Defects Center at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Stephen, who was bom with - kidney and ureter abnormalities, has been hospitalized 17 times in his short life. He also suffers from bilateral deafness. But this spunky youngster is not about to be defeated by his handicaps. Ijiu sunny personality and smiling, freckled face are symbols of one little boy’s courage, and his desire to help others despite the fact he * needs a good deal of help himself.
