The two instances in December of kidney transport via the new van are typical of the mobility of organ exchange among the member institutions of the Southeastern Regional Kidney Procurement Group. The van is the latest addition to the group’s network of communicatiohs, transport, and equipment facilities.
The van was acquired early this fall through a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund to the Department of Surgery at MCV, the Health Sciences Division of Virginia Commonwealth University.
In a case involving the van’s operation in early December, kidneys removed from a cadaver donor at Emory University-Grady Hospital in Atlanta were sent by Navy jet to Richmond, arriving at 10:30 p.m. The donor’s cells were typed and found to match with a recipient at the University^ of Virginia.
The organs were perfused for 12 hours on MCV’s preservation apparatus, a special machine that can maintain a kidney for up to 48 hours. The machine, still perfusing the kidneys, then was transferred to the new van, which is equipped to supply power for it. The van was dispatched to Charlottesville.
