Another instance occurred in , mid-December when donor kidneys were obtained from a f cadaver donor in Baltimore, Md. The organs were removed at 7:45 : p.m. The kidneys, packed in ice in a styrofoam box for shipping, , were enroute by 8:15 p.m. from j the hospital for a commercial air : flight to Richmond.
Virginia state police picked up i the organs at Byrd Field at 9:50 i p.m. and delivered them to MCV surgeons at 10:20 p.m. for typing and perfusion on the machine.
Kidney cell cross-matching at MCV again indicated that the most suitable recipient was one awaiting a transplant at Charlottesville. The transport van took the organs to Charlottesville for 2 p.m. surgery the next day.
Reports from the University of Virginia indicate that both j transplant patients are doing well.
To date more than 250 kidney transplants have been performed at Virginia’s two medical schools. The Southeastern Regional Kidney Procurement Group has a registry of more than 200 persons as potential recipients of transplants in North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia.
