Va. Travel Up At
Major Attractions
Richmond-Travel in Virginia in 1970, based on attendance at major travel attractions, was up 4.5 per cent over 1969. The Virginia State Chamber of Commerce’s “Monthly Travel Barometer’’ revealed that for the January through November perjod-of the 52 reporting attractions, 36 were ahead from 2.5 to 135 per cent, three were even, and 13 were behind from one to 24 per cent according to Jack R. Harter, Director of Travel Development.
Travel on Virginia’s highways by both in-state and out-of-state automobiles through November was up 3.89 per cent over the same 11-month period in 1969. Virginia auto travel was up 3.8 per cent for the 11-month period while out-of-state vehicular travel was ahead 4.88 per cent for the same 11-month period according to the Virginia Department of Highways.
Business in Virginia Beach based on sales tax collections on food, lodgings and admissions posted gains of 14.7 per cent in 1970 for the January-November period when compared with the same 1969 period, Harter said.
The sale of gasoline in Virginia for the first nine months of this year was ahead of the same three quarters of 1969 by 6.2 per cent. During that period of 1970 motorists purchased 1,825,258,272 gallons for which they paid $127.7 million in VirghiM 'Stahe taxes ab&otdittg -to the Virginia Petroleum Industries.
Restaurants statewide had an average 5 per cent gain over the 10-month period of 1969. The Virginia Beach area was reported to be “good” with other ares being “spotty,” Harter emphasized. This was attributed to an increase of the camping type vehicles in some of the predominently camping areas. It was noted, however that there was an increase over last year of families eating out, a restaurant spokesman said.
