Pledge Eyes
Virginians are signing up as eye donors at a rate more than twice that of any previous year. Figures supporting that statement were released today by L. Paul Byrd, Chairman of the Board of Old Dominion Eye Bank, co-ordinating agency for eye donation in eastern Virginia. Since the start of the eye bank’s fiscal year last July 1, 5244 new eye donor pledges have been received by the Richmond organization - bringing the total pledges on file to over 40,000. In the nine months of the current fiscal year, almost twice as many pledges have been made by Virginians than in any of the previous thirteen years of the eye bank’s history. Major credit for the great surge in pledges goes to the members of the Virginia Lions Clubs which sponsor and support the eye bank. This year, the eye bank made a special appeal to the Lions Clubs to help meet the growing demand for human eye tissue by extra effort in eye donor solicitation. Virginia Lions answered that plea in dramatic fashion. The supply of human eye tissue is not nearly sufficient to fill current needs. Sight-restoring corneal transplant operations have established a very satisfactory record of success, thus increasing demand for human eye tissue through eye donor pledges.
