Va. Traffic Deaths
Continue Downward
The first three months of the year saw Virginia’s traffic deaths dip 18 below those for the same period of 1970 to continue the downward trend established that year, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, reported today.
Deaths for the first quarter numbered 258 to compare favorably with the 276 for the first three months' of 1970, with pedestrian deaths down from 60 to 44. Deaths for all of 1970 dropped to 1,231 from the 1,304 of 1969 despite a rise of 5.4 percent in traffic volumes. Colonel Burgess noted that good reductions were obtained in February (103-86) and March (8980) but that January saw an increase (84-92). “The united and increased efforts and cooperation of citizens, officials, groups and state agencies are paying off,” he said, “and give us every hope of a second consecutive year of death reduction.” Concluding, he explained that a Slight upward revision in 1971 deaths might be expected due to late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured.
