in Fitness Program
Six young men, students of Rappahannock County High School, will represent this region in the annual Marine Corps Youth Physical Fitness Program in Baltimore, Md. this week-end. They will be among the more than 350,000 youth all over the nation to compete in the program which will culminate June 17 with the National Championship meet in Washington, D.C.
Rappahannock’s team is composed of Charles Thomas, Bill Taylor, Tom Taylor, Maury Nichols, Eriiest Dennis and Ronnie Jenkins. They will be accompanied by Athletic Director George Patterson. Rest events for the competition include a series of five exercises actually employed by the U. S. Marine Corps to test the fitness of individual Marines. Sit-ups, pushups, squat-thrusts, pull-ups and a 300 yard run are scored on a point system, 100 being the maximum score for each exercise. Elimination meets between schools within a geographical area of the country are conducted annually and two top scoring teams from each of the six Marine Corps Districts are invited to the national meet.
