Increase Projected
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, MARCH 26, 1971 - The population of Virginia has been projected to reach 5.4 million by 1980, 7.2 million by 2000, and 9.4 million by the year 2020. These projection figures compare to a 1960 population of approximately 4 million and a 1970 population figure of 4.6 million. The average annual population growth rate over the fifty year period from 1970 to 2020 would be 1.4 percent, compared to a 1.6 percent annual growth rate experienced during the 1960 to 1970 period. These projections for the state as well as projection figures for each of Virginia’s counties, cities, and planning districts are contained in a report (Statistical Information Series No. 71-1) just released by the Office of Research and Information of the Division of State Planning and Community Affairs. Besides the long range projections for the state, and counties, cities, and planning districts, the report shows population figures for 1960 and 1970 and average annual change rates for each ten year period to 2020.
