“That fact that some workers! who are severely disabled but are expected to recover and return to work is one of the chief reasons for a misunderstanding of the disability law under Social Security,” said Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, District Manager of the social security office in Winchester. It is not uncommon for a disabled person to approach the interviewer in a social security office with the remark, “I just came in to find out about disability, I don’t want to register a claim.” This same person usually ends up filing a claim for disability benefits for himself or herself and family. And sometimes the monthly family payment is as much as $434.40.
“The filing of the claim is advised when the disability is expected to last at least a year,” says Mrs. Crumpton.
To get disability benefits, a worker 31 or older must be fully insured and must have credit for five years of work in the 10 year period ending when he becomes disabled. If a worker becomes
