Nils K. G. Tholand
Nils K. G. Tholand, retired metallurgical engineer and longtime resident of Rappahannock County, died Tuesday, May 4,1971, in Culpeper Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The immediate cause of death was coronary occlusion. He was 72.
Mr. Tholand was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He was graduated in mechanical and metallurgical engineering from Chalmers Institute of Technology, Gothenburg, in 1920. He held various engineering positions in Sweden and Germany, and in 1924 immigrated to the United States.
He worked in Houston, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit, and in 1926 established the engineering and importing firm of Ekstrand & Tboland, Inc., in New York City. He introduced “sponge iron” in the American market. He closed his New York office about ten years ago and moved his operations to Piedmont, a cattle and apple farm near Sperryville, where he continued his activities in the steel business as American agent for various Swedish and English patents and processes.
