Groves Sentence
In Rappahannock County Circuit Court Wednesday morning, Judge R. V. Snead suspended execution of a 20 year prison sentence which he had previously imposed on Walter Clifford Groves for the murder last year of Thomas Haines.
Groves, who lived at Jeffersonton, shot and killed Thomas Haines, a resident of Amissville. The shooting occurred near Flint Hill April 1970.
Groves was placed on probation for 12 years under the supervision of a parole officer. He was ordered to pay $150 a month to a trust fund which will be established for minor children of Haines and to pay court costs. Other stipulations of the parole were that he should not go to the area in which the Haines families reside; he should not drink any alcoholic beverages, nor drive a motor vehicle except in business; could not own a weapon and is subject to search at any time by an officer. He was ordered to work regularly and obey all laws
