NEW MARKET, VA. - Plans are being made for more than 3,000 spectators for the Fourth Annual Re-enactment of the. Battle of New Market here next Sunday at 2 p.m., the New Market Battlefield Park said today.
At least ten states will be represented among the some 200 participants, members of reactivated Civil War units, some representing the Union and some the Confederacy, the announcement said. i
The 1864 Battle of New Market was notable for the heroic part played by 247 cadets of Virginia Military Institute who were under fire for the first time. They had marched 80 miles in four days to take part in the battle. Some were only 15 years old. The park was opened four years ago with funds bequeathed to VMI by an alumnus, George R. Collins.
