not sure whether Medicare can pay for a patient’s care, it asks for a decision from its intermediary (an organization selected by the Federal Government to make decisions about Medicare payments). The extended care facility is notified of the decision within a few days. To determine how long Medicare can pay for care in an extended care facility, up to the 100-day maximum, certain steps are taken:
1. The extended care facility and the intermediary regularly review the kind of care a patient needs and is receiving; 2. The patient’s doctor, periodically recertifies as to the continued need for extended care; and 3. A Utilization Review Com-' mittee for the extended care facility (a committee which includes other doctors) periodically checks the medical records and the treatment the patient is getting.
