For Cathy Price
Cathy Price, the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Price of Fairfax, will begin the climb toward a berth on the United States Swimming and Diving team for the 1976 Olympics. Cathy has been swimming for many years, but when she was nine, a friend challenged her to try the diving board and she couldn’t turn down a dare. She was nervous at first, but found how much fun it could be and was later asked to join the Northern Virginia Aquatic Club. The club coach picked Cathy for diving competition and she won Lhe overall diving title in the 11-12 year old division at the National AAU Junior Championships. She recently returned from a successful European tour which took her to Finland, Sweden, and Belgium. It was her first international competition and she performed like a veteran. In Finland she helped the U. S. capture the U. S.-Scandanavian title by placing first in the onemeter competition and second in the three-meter. She was too young to compete in the Swedish Cup but in the World Diving meet in Belgium she took first in the one and three-meter and was third in platform diving. Proud that she did well, Cathy Baid, “There’s a lot more pressure in international meets than I was used to here. I had to learn to relax and concentrate on my diving.’’ Cathy starts work on the Olympic training when she goes to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. August 10 for the National Junior Olympics. Next she hopes to compete for the National AAU Senior Diving Championship in Houston, Texas, August 14.
Cathy is the great-niece of C. J. Miller of Washington and her father “Kit” Price was reared in Washington, Va.
