Highway Contracts
Let on Low Bid
Twenty contracts totaling $16,714,874 have been approved for award by the State Highway Commission on the basis of low bids received during the month of June. Among the projects is the first section of the 10-mile. Altavista bypass in Campbell County, the 6.5 -mile Smithfield bypass in Isle of Wight County, and a section of Arterial 207 in Caroline County.
Work on the Altavista bypass will include interchanges at VA 43, Secondary 714, and US 29 and Secondary 712, all north of the Roanoke River. Bridges will be included at Secondary 711, the Southern Railway tracks and Secondary 626, and at the Otter River. Construction is expected to begin this fall on the south 5-mile section of the bypass and the two bridges over the Roanoke River. The south section will also include three interchanges, providing full control of access.
