Third Draft Lottery

Set for August 5th

The Selective Service System announced today that the 3rd annual draft lottery will be held Thursday, August 5, 1971. The lottery drawing will assign Random Sequence Numbers to all young men born in 1952. Unless deferred or exempt, these young men will face their year of prime exposure to the draft for the twelve months beginning January 1, 1972.

Representatives for the system pointed out that the lottery drawing-for determining the annual order of call-is part of the Ongoing Selective Service machinery under the Random Sequence System, and that the responsibility to conduct the lottery continues under draft law regardless of whether there is a current induction authority. “The young men who face possible induction next year deserve to know their relative chances of induction so that they are better
