Early as it may seem it is round up time for nominations to the fall feeder calf and yearling sales. Entries are still coming in daily for the October 12 Rappahannock Feeder Calf Sale. This is your sale and it certainly makes for better public relations with the buyers if we know well in advance the approximate number of steers and heifers, by breed to be offered. So, please make every effort to have your consignment in on time.
Consignment forms for the September 16 Madison Yearling Sale and the September 23 Culpeper Feeder Calf Sale are also available in our office. Checked out 24 corn fields scattered throughout the county last Friday for Southern Corn Leaf Blight. Using my own unofficial scoring system, the local blight situation is shaping up about as follows: 5 corn fields showed no sign of blight; 13 had a light infestation on 10 percent to 30 percent of the corn stalks; 5 had a medium infestation ranging from 60 to 95 percent of the stalks, and 1 corn field showed an advanced stage of blight on 100 percent of the stalks. Just got back from looking at Thomas Taylor’s sheep flock. This is a clean, well managed flock of sheep but it is infested with the worse case of wool maggots I have ever seen.
