Virginians are getting a new week to commemorate-State Park Week, set for Aug. 2-8.
Kicking off the observance at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 29, will be an address by FitzGerald Bemiss, chairman of the Virginia Commission of Outdoor Recreation. The program will take place in the amphitheater of Pocahontas State Park near Richmond.
Ben H. Bolen, commissioner of parks for Virginia, will unveil a banner to be displayed in the 20 recreational and historic areas operated by the Division of Parks.
In the ceremony Bemiss will present a badge with the State Park Week emblem to Miss Bonnie Woodall, who is working at Pocahontas this summer as the nature center’s receptionist. Employees at all parks will wear the insignia during the week.
While on duty Miss Woodall, from Dinwiddie County, doubles in the role of Pocahontas for whom the park is named, wearing an Indian costume. An exhibit in the park’s museum depicts the life of Chief Powhatan’s famed daughter, who saved the life of Captain John Smith and married the colonial planter, John Rolfe.
Bemiss headed the Virginia Outdoor Recreation Study Commission in 1964-65 while serving as a state senator representing Richmond. The group’s recommendations, adopted by the General Assembly, thrust the Old Dominion into a program of state park expansion, development of local and regional parks, protection of scenic roads and streams, and coordination of recreational and conservation matters among different levels of government.
