I FEEL IMPELLED (or is it compelled?) to write this, having been involved in the current clean-up drive. I hope it is not too controversial. A wife of orie litterbug said her husband didn’t throw his cans into the road, instead he threw them off the road. Now, that is my peeve. If you feel that it is an imperative — and heaven help you if you do, that you litter — please throw it in the road. It is doubly hard to climb banks, get down into ditches or into briar-patches, to pick up your trash.
One hiker asked me what I was doing. I told her we were having a clean-up drive. She asked if I needed some help. I told her I would appreciate it, but it was not her responsibility. She made this beautiful remark: “It is MY responsibility to help keep MY country beautiful.” She and her three companions pitched in and helped. It’s a pity that some of the local people are so unconcerned, however. I want to commend two couples in this area for the wonderful job they did.
Let us hope that our litterbug friends see the error of their ways and help us keep our environment beautiful. If they do not, let me urge the Interested populace to have these drives more often. The accumulation of litter would be easier to handle.
