FAUQUIER County Circuit Judge Rayner V.Snead found James Russell Pace, f. 57, of Warrenton, guilty of attempted extortion Tuesday morning in a case involving Marshall Bank. Pace will be sentenced on May 29.
Pace was found guilty of threatening the Marshall bank in a letter dated February 27 and phone call two days later to J. Edgar Piette, executive vicepresident of the bank, stating that instruction for deactivating explosives in the bank and its branch would be available only if payment of $50,000 were made.
Pace was indicted by a grand jury on March 26 when he pleaded “not guilty.” Tuesday morning, Pace changed his plea from not guilty to guilty.
PACE CAN receive a minimum of one year in jail or a maximum of 10 years in jail, and a fine of $1,000,
Piette said he received a letter February 27 at the office and two days later a call from Pace at about 1:50 p.m.
