SLIPPERY PAVEMENT, poor visibility and congested highways, especially during holidays, are a triple threat to drivers. “Thanksgiving can coincide with the first winter weather, when neither drivers nor their cars are ready for traveling in that kind of weather,” warns John T. Hanna, director, Highway Safety Division of Virginia.
Preparing the car for winter driving is the first step in avoiding accidents. Hanna suggested: “Make sure your car is in good mechanical condition, paying particular attention to those items that affect traction and vision, such as brakes, tires, lights, defroster and windshield wipers.
“Good tires with good treads are important year round, but even more so when pavements are slippery. Snow tires can be a real help for driving through snow. Reinforced tire chains are even more effective for driving through severe snow and ice conditions.”
