Dr. Lucas went to St. Albans from Philadelphia where he was assistant rector of St. James Episcopal Church and assistant headmaster and chaplain of Episcopal Academy.
He became a canon of the Washington Cathedral in 1932. Earlier, in 1917, after resigning from Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, he entered the Marine Corps, and later, as headmaster of St. Albans, he was known by the students as “the chief.” He also had been given the nickname of “Holy Al,” a holdover from his Marine days.
