“WE MAY marble this hall, if we can get it, but we’re not sure,” Mrs. Lipko says. “Anyway, there will be a huge stained glass window at the head of the stairs.” From the existing window at the top of the stairs, the auditorium attached to the rear of the building and the roofs of the classrooms at its side can be seen.
The Lipkds have removed part of the floor in the upstairs hall, enlarging the opening over the stairs. Now the stair railing will run straight up the steps, turn to each side at the landing and rise two steps more to the upstairs hall. Then the railing will extend around the opening, so the upstairs rooms will open onto a sort of balcony, overlooking the steps and downstairs hall.
“We’re looking for a tremendous chandelier to hang from the upstairs ceiling, over the stairs. And there’ll be French doors opening from the upper hall onto the front portico,” Mrs. Lipko said.
AS A school, the building had four classrooms on each floor, two on each side of the center hall. On the first floor, the Lipkos plan to have a library and living room on one side, a dining room and a kitchen on the other. “We’ll have French doors with wrought iron stairs leading into little
