‘Renegade’ power
“THESE RENEGADES are getting all the grants,” said Pete Luke, at last week’s meeting in Culpeper of the Rappahannock-Rapidan (Region 9) Planning District Commission. The Colonel made no secret of his displeasure about how Madison and Culpeper seem to be getting more grant Rinds than the actual members of the commission.
Fauquier and Warrenton representations to the District meeting were as concerned as Pete Luke, and here’s hoping they translate their concern into a searching inquiry into the situation.
If Madison and Culpeper don’t want to join the district, that’s their business and we have no quarrel with their decision. But we do wonder about some of the things that were said when Rappahannock and the other commission members were being pressured into joining up.
State officials were quite blunt about it—join up or lose out on lucrative (and needed) state and federal grants. So if membership was necessary to obtain grants, why does it seem that Madison and Culpeper get all the goodies?
“It’s not fair to take it out on them just because they won’t join,” said the executive director of the planning commission, when Pete Luke and others complained. Who says? It wasn’t “fair” for state bureaucrats to tell Rappahannock and Fauquier, they wouldn’t get consideration for grants if they ditki’t join, either.
