Highway deaths down
VIRGINIA’S TRAFFIC deaths for the first three months of 1974 stood at 216 to mark a substantial decrease when compared with the 258 for the same period of 1973, Colonel H.W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, has reported.
He said that it is difficult to explain but just about all the gain was achieved in February, which saw 50 deaths to mark the lowest February toll since the 36 of 1961. Score for February, 1973, was 90. There were 78 January, 1974, deaths and 77 for January, 1973. March tolls were 91 for 1973 and 88 for 1974. Here he observed that all 1974 statistics are subject to slight increases due to late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured and that there was every possibility of the March score for 1974 surpassing that of 1973.
Pedestrian deaths dropped from 40 to 35, deaths of motorcyclists stood even at seven each and those of servicemen rose from six to 10. Highway Department figures showed traffic volumes to have dropped about four percent for the first two months of the year.C
