THE COST of picking up roadside litter this year in the Culpeper Highway District came to $170,729.62, and more than one million dollars throughout the state according to a report from the Virginia Highway Department.
The Department said litter collecting costs statewide decreased slightly for the 1972-73 period—from $1,050,732 in 1971-72 to $1,020,888.
C. 0. Leigh, Highway Department maintenance engineer, noted that litter pickup throughout the state is held each year just prior to Historic Garden Week in Virginia.
He said the discouraging thing about the pickup is that the money spent in collecting litter that has been thrown along the roadways by motorists “really doesn’t buy anything permanent.”
