Mrs. Luke says most people don’t realize how many colors are really used in a painting. “Look at this one I’ve just done,” she said, pointing to an abstract painting that appears at first glance as if it contains six or eight basic colors. “Then look at what was used.”
She gestured towards a low table piled high with plastic margerine containers. “Each of those holds a different color which was used in that one painting.”
STUDENTS will not leave Mrs. Luke’s two - week workshop with their own Munsell system, complete to hundreds of file cards and color chips. But they will have gained an understanding of the intricate realm of color and how different colors react when juxtaposed to one another.
“The course I teach, like any effort in painting or drawing, brings about an increased awareness of what you see,” Mrs. Luke said. “Students may resist it at first, thinking that learning any system is against freedom. But of course no system can make decisions for you. It’s there for reference, as a tool. But its one that vou must learn how to use. ’ ’
