COST OF picking up roadside litter in area counties was:
Fauauier Coijnty. $7,553. 92; Loudoun, $10,938.98; Prince William, $20,938. 69; Rappahannock, $8,928. 17, and Fairfax, $50,696. 73. In Clarke County, which is in the Staunton Highway District, cost of the litter pickup amounted to $5,335. 29;—in Warren County the cost was $5,724.31.
Leigh urged motorists to keep litter containers in. their cars, to use litter barrels placed along highways and to encourage localities to establish public refuse disposal facilities as a means of keeping litter off the state’s highways.
He warned that, in addition to being unsightly, litter can cause a safety problem. Even windblown trash, he said, can distract drivers and obstruct their visibility. □
