“I don’t like to talk about the course and use words like ‘system’ or even mention keeping notes. That turns off students, as well as anyone just listening,” Mrs. Luke says. “Most people, including many artists, don’t like to acknowledge that art does involve a system. They like to think of it as all creative, all feeling.”
MRS. LUKE feels that many students fear, and avoid, a class that appears to be so academic. “But I’ve had many students come back and tell me they wished they had more notes and kept better files. They’ve realized that this kind of precision with color enables them to do things they couldn’t otherwise.”
