MOST OF Mrs. Luke’s recent work is abstract. “Most serious artists now are bound to do abstract,” she said. “When you’ve spent your life studying and working in art, realism loses in spontaneity for you. You’ve seen how it’s developed over hundreds of years. You appreciate each stage, each new breakthrough that has advanced realism. But it’s just not fresh to you. That’s different for someone outside the art field. They’re just learning about it; realism is new and fresh to them. Of course, the more you painted the better you could get.
“But you already understand it. So most artists want to pursue an area they can explore, something they don’t already understand. At least I do.”
Mrs. Luke works in a bright studio. One big room has brightly painted stools, chairs and easels. Shelves are laclen with numerous books on art amassed during her career. A small table sits atop another, keeping seedling plants close to a bright light.
