HAD DACRON been invented when Icarus attempted to fly, he might have been more successful. Icarus, in the Greek legend, flew too closely to the sun with his wings of feathers affixed by wax and plummeted to the earth when the wax melted.
It is not legend that man is actually flying on dacron wings. A recent sport catching on across the nation is “hang-gliding,” soaring * from a hilltop on a synthetic material kite. And where is there more suitable terrain for this pasttime than in Rappahannock?
The blue and gold, red or yellow tent-like objects you might glimpse on a hill or spot floating through the air as you drive along a highway are not illusions, but members of the Capitol Hang-Gliders Association trying out their Rogallo Wings. The kite-like wings are assembled of aircraft aluminum poles and stainless steel cables covered with a Dacron canopy. The wing measures 18 x 22 feet and its flight is controlled by shifting of body weight and the angle of the kite. There are no moving parts, no engine, no wheels.
