A DOUBLE FEATURE program awaits all those attending the fourth annual membership meeting of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection on Friday, September 6. The meeting will begin promptly at 8 p.m. in the county court house in Washington, Va.
In addition to the talk by Gerry McCarthy, chairman of the Virginia Council on the Environment, previously announced, there will be a film entitled “The Raging James,” which highlights the detrimental effects of channelization, such as was done on the James river. The same thing could have happened to the Thornton River if State Highway engineers had pressed their plan to “improve” Route 211 through Sperryville.
The film features Newton N. Carroll, president of “Reclaim the James,” and 13 experts on hydrology and related diciplines. Mr. Carroll will be present at the RLEP meeting for further discussion and to answer questions. McCarthy will report on the State of the Environment in the Commonwealth. He is the former executive director of the Governor’s Council on the Environment.
There will be an election of officers for the coming year. All present members of the RLEP and all persons wishing to join, or to support the League’s work, should attend. □
