Greg. This took place in California where the ocean breezes allowed the gliders to really “hang.”

WHAT GOES up must come down, even in Cali-, fornia, and hang-gliders included. To land, the front edge of the wing is tilted upward and the glider lands on both feet, just like a bird. It all sounds so simple and easy and with caution it is, Molenaar said.

You begin with a small hill and gradually build up height and skill. It has its hazards, too. The air currents must be right for a safe flight and the level of the wing must be right to prevent nose-diving into the ground on take-off. A harness and helmet are necessary safety equipment, also.

With headquarters in Annandale, the Capitol HangGliders Club has about 200 members from the metropolitan area.

Gradually, good hanggliding sites are being made available in the west and the U. S. Forest Service has expressed interest in providing land for the fliers. The thought is toward incorporating gliding and skiing areas together to institute year-round activities, to provide a sturdy financial basis for both sports — Sarah Latham □
