some complaints were voiced about the way in which the property reassessment was being conducted. Several Supervisors felt the reassessment was proceeding too slowly, and some questioned the approach being taken by the appraisers sent from the state office.
SUPERVISOR Herbert Foster said, “I was talking to one and told him to remember that a certain barn was only good for storing hay. He told me that it was easy to convert barns like that into apartments, where a farmer could realize a lot of income.” Foster didn’t think that was the proper attitude for appraisal of a hay barn. Other Supervisors agreed, and said they’d heard similar tales.
Pete Luke said he knew of several instances where
the state assessors had put in a full day’s pay, even when they didn’t have a full day’s work to do. At the Supervisors’ bidding,
