‘Winningest float’
THE “WINNIGEST” FLOAT in Rappahannock County this summer was sponsored by the Rappahannock Recreation Association. It won awards in three of the county’s four carnival parades, winning firsts in both Flint Hill and Sperryville, and placing second in Washington.
The “Youth Center” float featured a mini tennis court on the back of a pickup truck, with the banner slogan: “Youth seen in these courts now will not be seen in other courts later.” The float also displayed the traditional picture of “Uncle Sam” with the paraphrased slogan proclaiming, “Rappahannock Wants Youth,” and a large placard urging everyone to “Join Us.”
Teenagers who participated by making decorations for the float or playing tennis on the line of march included: Recreation Association student president Tom Metzinger, Tim and Nina Metzinger, Fook Yuen, Donna Cannon, Cindy Baldwin, Bill and Mary Kilby, and Connie Delgrosso. The float won cash awards totalling $60 to help swell the association’s treasury.
