CORN SILAGE — Most Rappahannock farmers do an excellent job of harvesting their corn silage. But some of us, in the rush to get the joh done overlook the importance of conditions necessary for good fermentation and top feeding value. Here are a few reminders: Harvest as much as possible at hard dough or late dent stage of maturity; cut clean and fine to insure packing; pack and pack some more to exclude air pockets and insure good keeping quality.
FEEDER CATTLE GRADES — The Virginia Department of Agriculture has revised its feeder cattle grading system. The following is a brief summary: Fancy and choice feeders will be above average in size, scale, length, muscling and thickness.
Good will be below average in frame size, but will have muscling and thickness. Medium will be above average in frame size, but below average in muscling and thickness. Common cattle will be lacking in conformation and very thinly muscled. Shorts will be extremely short.
