A wing costs in the neighborhood of $500 when purchased from a sporting goods manufacturer. Many gliders construct their own wing, reducing the cost to about $200. The wing weighs 35 pounds and it collapses so it can be transported on the top of a car or station wagon.
“With your wing you need only a hill, the height of which coupled with air currents determines the length of flight,” says Greg Molenaar, a computer programmer from Bethesda, who was hang gliding Saturday at the Raymond Sutphin farm on Route tc9.
“A short, fast sprint generates the power needed to take off from the brink of a hill. Once in flight, you swing, your body to a horizontal position to minimize wind resistance and lengthen the time in the air,” he said.
Greg has been involved in hang-gliding for a couple of years and has become an instructor of the sport. He and a number of other Capitol Club members have been spending weekends in Rappahannock on their wings.
