Hunting records
THE 1974-75 DEER SEASON, just concluded, put 352 deer into the bag of Rappahannock County hunters. Down by about 12% of last year’s record kill in the county, this year’s harvest was considered very good. This season now stands as the second best year on record and for the third straight year Rappahannock’s harvest has been in the 300-400 range.
Of the 352 total, 67 were doe which at 19% of the total is well within the safe range as far as the future of the herd is concerned. The bear kill took a complete reversal from a year ago. From a Rappahannock record of 13 in 1973, this past season produced zero.
Seven turkeys were killed in Rappahannock this past season. 13 had been checked in the previous fall season. The turkey population may very well be down. Possibly due to the frequent rains of last May. As far as the kill figures as an indicator however, this coming spring season should serve better than the season just past.
