HELEN FULLER became editor of the New Republic after Walter Lipmann held the job. She had moved to Washington from Alabama after Franklin D. Roosevelt became president. She became one of the administrators of Roosevelt's Youth Program. Miss Fuller was a close friend of Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson. After her death, a telegram was received from the Johnsons, describing Mrs. Fuller as “an advance trumpet, heralding awareness and compassion."
Miss Fuller had visited in Rappahannock since 1950. George Davis said. When she began to live in the county, her prominent friends often came to visit. “She'd often have admirals, generals, congressmen and senators," George Davis said. “Walter Lipmann and Helen and Melvyn Douglas came often.”
