MISS FULLER’S insurance policy would pay a maximum of $30,000, George Davis said. So the executors put the insurance company “on notice” that they would be liable for that amount plus whatever a jury awarded the Baldwins, if the case went to court.
A compromise was arrived at out of court, Davis said. The Baldwins accepted the maximum payment available under the insurance policy and, in addition, a payment “in kind” from the estate, the Diego Rivera painting.
George Davis went to New York to get the painting and turned it over to the Baldwins’ attorney, T.C. Lea of Culpeper. Lea arranged to have the painting sold and the money was given to the Baldwins. Lea negotiated through several art dealers before the painting was finally sold to Marshall Coyne, proprietor of the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. Davis didn’t know how much Coyne paid for the painting. But it was around $10,000, he thought.
