MEETING December 18, the Virginia Commission of Outdoor Recreation re-endorsed an earlier recommendation calling for scenic river designation of a ten-mile section of the Staunton River between Long Island and Brookneal. The Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries has long been on record as favoring scenic river status of the Staunton River.
The Virginia State Council of Trout Unlimited has also, in action taken this week, voiced their recommendation for scenic status of the river. Renewed interest in the status of the river has been brought about by the proposed construction of a series of dams on the river which would inundate approximately 33,000 acres of land. The proposal by the Southside Electric Cooperative would cost $2.6 billion and would span a period of 20 to 25 years.
THE DAMS, if built, would provide pump-storage-hydroelectric power generation in combination with steam generators. They also would doom the landlockexLstriped bass population of Kerr Reservoir and its tributaries, as the Staunton River provides the only major spawning area used by these fish.
