“STATE cross country champions, district boys track champs and second in regionals, with girls track group fourth in the district— ‘ain’t’ bad for a school without a track!” These were some comments made at the fourth annual RCHS sports award banquet Tuesday night by assistant principal and Athletic Director George Patterson. The dinner was held at the Culpeper Holiday Inn where the marquee projected, “Welcome, Rappahannock High School.”
In the presentations two Panther coaches received Skyline District Coach-of-the Year awards, and Bill Taylor, ace runner from Sperry ville, took home three trophies, including the coveted Sportsmanship award, the second one to go to the Taylor home. Bill repeated his brother Tom’s feat of the previous year. Bill was named the most valuable track man and the most valuable cross country runner. Jerry Thomas was named Most Improved Cross Country runner.
John Toth, cross country and track coach, was named Skyline District Track Coach of the Year and was presented an engraved plaque. Under his direction the RCHS Panthers captured first place in Skyline District, and placed second in the region in track competition.
