WHILE THE Planning Commissioners were making up their minds on whether to go ahead with the hearing without Lea, Kilpatrick rose to speak again. “With great deference to Mr. Lea,” he began, “I’ve covered courts for 35 years and I recognize this as a lawyers’ trick. He is wandering off to make a speech while you consider the most important challenge to the zoning law since it was enacted. I will not speak on this request tonight, because I will not be party to a lawyers’ trick, but I will cancel a lucrative speaking engagement for July 18, so that I may be here at that meeting.”
